is it possible, finally, for one human being to achieve perfect understanding of another? we can invest time and energy in serious efforts to know another person, but in the end, how close are we able to come to that person's essence? we convince ourselves that we know the other person well, but do we really know anything important about anyone? Murakami, The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle.

this piece is loosely based on a William Blake illustration titled Satan Watching the Endearments of Adam and Eve. i almost never work in watercolors, this piece is watercolor on paper. i did it in 99. there were a couple of pencil studies that lead up to this small painting. Blake was totally crazy. his images are abstract and bizarre, but there is always symbolism in everything. from the subjects or contents of a piece to their positioning.
